Buying an EV? Read This Before You Order a Charger
The charger itself is the easy part. Whether your home is ready for it is the question that actually determines your cost — and it’s worth answering before you click buy.
Question 1: How fast do you actually need to charge?
A 40-amp charger adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour; a 48-amp unit adds a bit more but usually requires a hardwired install and a heavier circuit. Most commuters plugging in overnight never notice the difference. Buy for your driving, not the spec sheet.
Question 2: Hardwired or plug-in?
Plug-in units (using a NEMA 14-50 outlet) are cheaper to install and easy to take with you when you move. Hardwired units support higher amperage and are the better choice outdoors. Both are safe when installed correctly — “correctly” being the operative word, since the outlet behind a plug-in charger must be an industrial-grade receptacle, not the budget one from the big-box aisle.
Question 3: Can your panel handle it?
This is the one that surprises people. A charging circuit is one of the largest continuous loads in a home, and an electrician must run a load calculation before adding it. Three outcomes are possible:
- Your panel has room. The install is straightforward.
- It’s close. A load-management device can share capacity with another large appliance.
- It’s full. You need a panel upgrade first — better to price that with the charger, not discover it after.
Get the load calculation first
A reputable electrician will do the math and quote you a firm price before you’ve spent anything. If someone quotes a charger install without asking what else is in your panel, keep shopping.
