5 Signs Your Breaker Panel Needs Replacing

1. Breakers that trip repeatedly

A breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job. A breaker that trips every time you run the vacuum and the space heater together is telling you the circuit — or the panel behind it — is undersized for how you live.

2. Warmth, buzzing, or a burning smell

The panel cover should be room temperature and silent. Warmth, a faint buzz, or any burning odor means a connection inside is arcing or overheating. Treat this one as urgent and call an electrician the same day.

3. A fuse box or split-bus panel

If your home still has screw-in fuses or a split-bus panel (common in the 1960s and 70s), it predates modern safety standards by half a century. Insurance companies increasingly refuse to write policies on them.
